Getting the Most from Seizure Treatment
Tips for achieving success with seizure treatment
The goal of epilepsy treatment is to increase seizure control (fewest possible seizures) with the fewest possible side effects and treatment complexities so that you can lead a normal, active life.
If your doctor has prescribed medication to help control your seizures, you can help to make your treatment as successful as possible. Here are some things to keep in mind that can help you get the most from your seizure medication:
Understand your AED: there are questions you should ask your doctor or pharmacist
Take your medicine exactly as instructed
Let your healthcare providers know about all other medicines you take (including ones you buy over the counter)
Have patience: it may take several weeks or longer to find out whether the drug will work or if the dosage is right
Talk to your doctor before you stop taking your medicine – sudden withdrawal can lead to serious side effects or become life threatening
Tell your doctor about any side effects or unusual changes in your health
Refill your prescription regularly - before you run out
Travel with extra medicine. Keep it in your carry-on luggage with a copy of your prescription
